The Atlanta-Rio Sister Cities Foundation Gains 501(c)3 Status

The Atlanta-Rio de Janeiro Sister Cities Foundation (ARJSCF) received nonprofit 501(c)3 status from the Internal Revenue Service in November 2010. ARJSCF was founded in 2007 in Atlanta, Georgia to strengthen partnerships and communication between Georgia and Brazil by collaborating with organizations and funding programs that promote culture, education. A volunteer board of directors leads the organization and is responsible for program development and fund raising.
The Foundation was originally created as the funding arm for The Atlanta-Rio de Janeiro Sister Cities Committee, which operates under the City of Atlanta’s International Affairs department and Sister Cities International, a division of the U.S. State Department. The Committee is a 30-year-old organization formed by then Governor Jimmy Carter and Mayor Sam Massell.
ARJSCF Programs have included a partnership with the National Black Arts Festival (NBAF) and the Brazilian Consulate in Atlanta to infuse Brazilian culture and history into NBAF’s 2008-2009 program schedule; and the Atlanta Housing Authority (AHA) to provide educational scholarships for Atlanta students.
